Week 10 Review

The following email contains information about the weeks practice. The email will outline the sessions that have been completed and what the players worked on. We have a player-centric, proactive curriculum which ensures the players will cover all the necessary mechanics, skill work, and give players a chance to be decision makers and creative players. Through the long-term development from U8 to U19, the players will pass through different stages and priorities as outlined in the program welcome meeting.

While during practice the players will be given the tools they need, if an individual wants to push on with playing at a higher level and performing to the best of their ability, practicing at home will always give them that extra edge, and we can’t encourage enough for those with passion for the sports to practice in their own time. This also avoids unnecessary over-training of structured practices continuously throughout the week.


ADP Training Pool, U8 and Competitive Ages

  • Technical Grid

A carousel of dribbling and juggling challenges, utilizing the size 1 ball for greater eye foot co-ordination in juggling, and the need for greater purpose of control when dribbling. A practice with a high number of touches on the ball.

  • Small Sided Games

A 3v3 to 4v4 format where players play the sport. Gaining game insight and intelligence while playing the sport in a pressure free environment

10’s to 07’s Competitive Teams

  • Dribbling Under Pressure

1st attacker dribbling to use both feet when under pressure. Using cones initially, the player transfers the ball between feet, depending on the direction of pressure, as they perform a skill at the cone the shift the ball between feet and get an extra touch to move the ball away from the defender. 1st defender applies physical pressure through leaning to help develop the attacker’s strength and balance on the ball when under pressure, progressing to trying to win the ball.

  • Small Sided Games 1

A set of small sided games with different methods of scoring to force the player in to 1v1 situations on the field, and games designed to replicate functional areas on the field. Focus of this small sided game is to understand the roles of the 1st attacker, and 1st defender, but following on from the week before where it was now played in teams.

1st Attacker

  • Penetrate through the defense by completing one of the following successfully –
  • Dribbling, either to beat the defender or to take the space further up the field
  • Passing, accurately to a supporting player, or in to space for a support player’s run. Goals more likely to b scored by switching the point of attack.
  • Shooting, hitting the target from a variety of positions on the field, or recognizing a player in a better position who could find a better chance of success with shot

1st Defender

    • Preventing the 1st attacker any space or time on the ball
    • Approach the attacker at speed to take away space
    • Be patient once distance has been closed, slowing down the attack, and waiting for the attacker to make a mistake
    • Forcing attackers away from dangerous areas on the field
  • Small Sided Games

06’s to 04’s

  • Fitness with a Ball, Turning and Acceleration

Focusing on the reaction time of players to a stimulus, being visual or sound. Coaches attempt to confuse the player by mixing visual and verbal cues to challenge the concentration of the player. While mid-season, this session is short on the fitness duration with a large part kept for play. The fitness here is specific to sprint speed, acceleration, and progressing to game situations with recovery runs.

  • 5 Point Pattern

The pattern includes a grid with players at each corner, and 2 players at a cone in the middle of the grid. The pattern can replicate many of the positions that can be found in the 4-3-3 system of play. Players looked for visual cues in play to know when to create space to receive the ball, and movement of players in front of the unit in possession of the ball to get in to supporting positions. The pattern can be changed once all movement has been developed to show creativity in play and to work on the rotation of positions as the game is being played.

03’s and Older

  • Angles and Distance of Pressure

A defensive practice, working on the approach from the 1st defender when confronting the 1st attacker. 1st defender needs to approach at speed with long strides, slowing down as they get closer and positioning their body so they are side on and low, with a balanced body shape. The players focus on the ball, and at the right moment attempt to poke the ball away. The defenders worked on retreating when needed, if the attacker can dribble at them in space. Responsibility of the defender is to delay the attacker and force an error, with the characteristic of being smart in positioning and patient waiting for a mistake. Defenders looked for the visual cue of the ball in flight as when to close down at speed to put the attacker’s first touch under pressure.

  • CIG – Making Play Predictable

Session focus was on the forwards making the opposition play predictable. This enables the team to initially drop off to encourage playing out of the back, and then stepping as forwards apply pressure to apply pressure high up the field. The forwards worked as a pair forcing the player with the ball to make predictable passes in to midfield. Technical aspects included, delaying the play not over committing, controlling the play and forcing the team lateral or backwards, 2nd defender providing cover at an angle to prevent penetrative passes forward, and confronting the player at an angle that makes the play predictable.

Roles and Responsibilities –

    • Player #9/ or #10 (strong side of the field) – directs the defenders to play out on one side of the field. Advanced angled run to cut off the ball back inside to a supporting center back
    • Player #7 or #11 (strong side of field) – cuts off the flank to narrow the passing challenge of the attacking player
    • Player #9 or #10 (weak side of the field) – press high on to the back pass, if player continues to move forward now pinch infield to create an numbers up situation to intercept the pass
    • Player #7 or #11 (weak side of field) – squeezes infield with the number 6 to provide a number up situation in the middle of the field, along with the #8 providing the immediate pressure on the ball out
    • Player #8 – Applies pressure between the seams of the front 2 defending players, creating a triangle of pressure. The more pressure from 1st and 2nd defender, the closer #10 gets to challenge the ball, waiting to defend 1 v 1 from a dribble, or intercepting the pass in to midfield
  • Forwards Making Play Predictable

Same coaching points as the CIG session but used in the Phase Play methodology. Focusing on the phases 1 and 2 of defensive play, effecting the goalkeeper’s decision and disrupting the oppositions build up play. Pressing high up the field is timed to work on certain cues on the field, with all units within the team system having a role. Forwards for the attacking team to play in to the midfield in the midfield third, allowing the defending team to intercept the ball high up the field and be within a goal scoring opportunity from the moment of transition

 

Every session is structured to facilitate all four pillars of the players development, and to include challenges, targets, and competition to get players to push themselves further. We are a program that heavily focuses on the players individual development, and not to get caught up in the race for trophies and excessive travel to unnecessary tournaments.
